Lawrence Surendra

A Chemical Engineer with specialization in Environmental and Development Economics. As a Science and Technology Policy Specialist, he has a record of over three decades of professional engagement and academic work in the Asia and Pacific Region and India related to teaching and guiding research in areas such as: Science Technology (S&T) and Society; Science, Risk and Uncertainty; Public Policy relating to S & T and Environment and Ecology; Natural Resources, resources mapping, planning and use; Ecological Design and Institutional Development; HRD Policy for Youth, National Youth Policy Development; Sustainable Water use and Eco-Sanitation; Development Economics; Environmental and Natural Resource Economics; Curriculum Development and Planning in areas of Rural Development Studies, Environmental Economics and Systems and Sustainability Thinking.

He has been a prime mover and promoter of Rain Water Harvesting for over three decades and Founder of the All Indian Rainwater Harvesters Network along with Anil Agarwal. Involved in the promotion of Eco-Sanitation for over two decades. Recognized in India and Asia as a Sustainability Expert with hands on experience in concrete interventions related to water, sanitation, waste and energy and expert speaker and adviser at National Summits on Water and Sanitation and policy development for water and sanitation for utility companies, managers and government.

His career has spanned work in several reputed institutions such as the Institute for Research in Environment and Development, Paris, France; United Nations University, Tokyo and Hong Kong; United-Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP), Bangkok; UNESCO-APCEIU, Seoul, S.Korea; UNESCO, Bangkok;  Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Stockholm, Sweden; Dag Hammarskjold Foundation, Uppsala, Sweden. He was played a key role for UNESCO Bangkok during the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD) and led key activities for UNESCO in the region for capacity building activities relating to Education for Sustainable Development especially in the area of Reorienting Higher Education for Sustainability.

He served on the Karnataka State Appellate Authority under the Air and Water Act for six years and was part of some significant judgements that have stood the scrutiny of the High Courts and the National Green Tribunal. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers,

He has been Visiting Faculty and Lectured at Academic institutions abroad and India, which includes Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada; Institute of Asian Cultures, Sophia University, Tokyo, Hosei University, Tokyo, Okayama University and other universities in Japan; University of Windsor, Windsor, Canada;Sung Hong Hoe University, Seoul, S.Korea; University of Oslo, Centre for Environment and Development, Norway; Norwegian Agricultural University, Aas; Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong: Third World Studies Centre, University of the Philippines and Teachers’ College, Columbia University; he is currently a Visiting Professor, Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. As a Founding Member of TSP he is an active team player in TSP’s capacity building for higher education activities.
